Travel Safety Tips

Level: Intermediate

Objective: To discuss travelling, tourists, tourist scams and problems while travelling

How to plan and what to avoid during your international trip - как планировать и что нужно избегать во время путешествий.

Словарный запас: Electricity grid, hotel safe, fake goods, be wary, roaming charges, to venture off, issue, tipping, hidden fees, to drive off, be aware, pickpocketers, target, money belt

It’s important to understand that for international travel you are allowed much heavier baggage that domestic travel; make sure you know the exact specifications before you fly. Also, the electricity gridinternationally is different in each country, so take an adaptor with you.

Your passport is the most important document whilst travelling; I suggest leaving it in the hotel safe when you travel around the city.

The two most prevalent tourist scams are unlicensed guides and selling of fake goods. Be wary.

My suggestion is get a local cell phone – do not take your cell phone from your home country and travel around the world with it. I’ve done it before and I’ve had thousands and thousands of dollars of roaming charges. I will never do it again.

It’s really important to stay in groups, don’t venture off alone, dress conservatively, and if you have a real issue, immediately go into a hotel, go into a restaurant, go into a shop, and say ‘look, I’m in trouble, please help me’.

Each country has different tipping customs, so go onto the internet and do a little bit of research to find out exactly what you need to do when you get to that given country.

Watch out for hidden fees; make sure that you have everything explained to you before you drive off, very important.

Be aware that there are pickpocketers out there, and they will target you. I suggest you buy a nice, simple money belt, and that is pickpocket proof.

Discussion: Can you think of any tourist scams? What ways can you lose your money / get ripped off on holiday. Have this ever happened to you? What do you do if it happens? (Police station role-play)
