Everything but the kitchen sink - все, кроме раковины,
Out of the frying pan and into the fire - из сковороды и в огонь
Did you know – знаете ли вы, that in English - что в английском языке there are a number of expressions about the kitchen - есть много выражений о кухне.
In this lesson, - в этом уроке I’m going to share three of them - я собираюсь поделиться с вами тремя из них.
Let’s start with one of my favorites - давайте, начнем с одного из моих любимых.
“Everything but the kitchen sink - все, кроме раковины”
This expression means too many things - это выражение означает слишком много вещей or a lot of of unnecessary things - или много из ненужных вещей.
For example, - например, my grad father used to joke in saying - мой дедушка имел обыкновение шутить говоря, that my grand mother carried everything - что моя бабушка носила все, but kitchen sink in her purses – кроме раковины, в ее сумках.
And I have one of the bags - и у меня есть одна из сумок, that used to belong to my grand mother - которые раньше принадлежали моей бабушке.
Inside she really did carry a lot of things - внутри она действительно носила много вещей.
Everything from a flash light - все от фонарика to photo album - до альбома с фотографиями.
She truly carried everything - она действительно носила все, but kitchen sink with her – кроме раковины, в ней.
Let’s go on to the second expression - давайте, перейдем ко второму выражению. Over here I have a frying pan and fire - эдесь у меня есть сковорода и огонь.
The expression - выражение :
“Out of the frying pan and into the fire - из сковороды и в огонь”,
means (that) you just went from one bad situation – означает,(что) вы только что попали от одной плохой ситуации to another, perhaps even worse – в другую, возможно еще более худшую.
Last expression: let’s begin by looking up here. You’ll see the ceiling fan. It’s quite common to have a ceiling fan in kitchens because when we cook we get hot and who likes to be in a room that’s really hot.
We say “if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen.” It means that if you can’t handle the competition, then quit or don’t even start at the first place.
OK? Here are three expressions I shared with you:
- “Everything but the kitchen sink.” means too many things or a lot of unnecessary things.
- “Out of the frying fan and into the fire” which meant you went in being with one bad situation and now you’re in another, perhaps even worse.
- “If you can’t stand the heat, get out of the kitchen.” You can also say if you can’t take the heat, get out of the kitchen, which means if you can’t face the competition, you should just quit or don’t even start in the first place.
