Level: high beginner - intermediate.
This is part 3 of a lesson on prepositions of location and direction. The list of prepositions is long, so this is meant to be a review and not an introduction.
This is part 3 of our lessons and we’re looking at words to answer the question where. [see screen and listen]
I think the best of explain preposition of direction is just to show you. So I’m going to take you to a special place. This is the playground; the playground is near my home. I’m going up the stairs. Now I’m going down the slide. In this picture, I get into the tunnel, I crawl through the tunnel, and I climb out of the tunnel. Here I step onto the bridge and walk across the bridge. I’m walking under the bridge. Now I’m climbing over the bench. Here I’m walking towards a tree. Now I’m walking around a tree. [see screen and listen]
Number one read the statement to yourself and then I’ll tell you the answer. [see screen and listen] Before we end, let’s review all the prepositions that we’ve learned. We’ve had part one and two on prepositions of location, and part 3 prepositions on direction. Let’s put it all together now in a final exercise. [see screen and listen]
Listen to my questions and tell me the answer. In this first clip, are the fish in the water or on the water? Do I start at the bottom or at the top of the ladder? Am I sitting on or in the stairs? Do I start in front or behind the bench? Is the man standing at or on the snow? Am I among or between the poles? Are the cars inside or outside of the buildings? Are the cars on or in the street? Do I stand opposite or by the tree? Are the flowers on or in the vase? Where am I standing? Can you name each preposition? Is there another building next to this one? Am I near or beside the pond? Do we say I’m through or in the window? Am I in or on the snow?
Some prepositions can be used as adverbs, so let’s talk about difference between prepositions and adverbs for a moment. [see screen and listen] so here are two bonus questions: I’ll tell you the statements, you tell me prepositions. [see screen and listen] All right you made to the end of this lesson on prepositions of location and direction. Good job! Happy studies! |
