Homonyms are words - омонимы - это слова, that sound the same - которые звучат одинаково, but have different meanings - но имеют различное звучание and spelling - и написание.

How to differentiate homonyms: They’re, there, their

Hi, my name is Rebecca, and today Iwe’re gonna be talking about some commonly confused words in English.  We have several words like these, which can be quite challenging.

So these words are called, homonyms.

A homonym is a word, which sounds the same as another word, but it is spelled differently, and has a different meaning.

Let’s start with the first set for today.  These are which one’s written on the board.  The first one is They’re, the second one is Their, and the last one is There.

So as you can see, they’re all pronounced the same, but they’re quite different.

The meaning is different, spelling is different, and when you’re writing, you really need to know the difference because if you make mistake in one of these words, they’re fairly basic words and you don’t wanna loose points in essay or on IELTS or on your TOEFL exam in one obviously … quite basic words.

OK?

So, let’s examine that of little more detail.

The first one is They’re: this one is contraction; a contraction is when we combine two words. So this contraction, They’re, is the combination of They plus are.

We take out the a and we have the contraction They’re.  So that’s the first one, OK?  Let’s thnk of some examples with They’re, the first one.

For example, they’re British. They’re sitting in the car.  They’re international students.  In each of these cases, we’re trying to say, they are ~.  They are international students.  They are sitting in the car, and so on.

OK?

Let’s go on to the second one.

The second one is Their.  There is a possessive adjective.

It means; it belongs to them.  All right?  For example, that’s their house.  That’s their car.  Have you seen their new house? And so on.  So, that’s been used as a possessive adjective to refer to something that belongs to them.

Let’s go to the third one, There.

There can be two things; in one case, it can be used as an introduction before the verb, to be.

There’s John.  There’s my book, or there’s my friend.  There is sale at the mall, things like that.  It can also be used as an adverb to saying ‘in that place’.  Your book’s over there.

Your car’s parked over there.  So this is another way that we can use there.  So now, you’ve got these three clear, I’m gonna ask you a few questions and you tell me which of these is the right one that you will use in that example.

OK?

So, if we say, have you visited their house?  Have you visited their house?

Which one is that?  Have you visited their house?

Or saying ‘their house’ meaning the possessive form, the house that belongs to them.  So, we’re talking about the middle one which is the possessive adjective.

Here is another one, the’re good friends.  Let me give it to you again, they’re good friends.  Which one is that?  Right, it’s the first one.  They’re good friend is the contraction of two words, They are, correct?  So, it’ll be the first one.  Let’s take another one.  There are many ways to improve your English.

There are many ways to improve your English.  Which there is using now?  OK?  Have a look, right, is the last one.  There are many ways to improve your English.

So take a minute to review that, when I come back, we’re going to do a little test one sentene which I’d like you to write down, maybe you can grab a piece of paper and a pen in the mean time, and I’ll be right back.  OK, did you grab a piece of paper?

So here is the quiz to see if you master these three words.

(1. _____) sitting over(2. _____) in (3._____) car.

Got that?

(1. _____) sitting over (2. _____) in (3._____) car.

Write that down while you’re writing it down, I will write it on board for you.

OK?

Did you get all those fours?

They are sitting over there, in that place, in their car, in the car that belongs to them.

So if you got that one right, you probably understood this concept very well.

If you want to do some more review, write up some more sentences with three the examples and this way you can be sure that you won’t make mistake in something quite basic.
